Tree Pruning

Tree Pruning Blue Mountains

Trees are one of the best things about living in the Blue Mountains, but they also need looking after properly — especially given how exposed a lot of mountains properties are to wind, storms and the occasional heavy snowfall up near the top of the range. Regular, sensible tree pruning keeps trees healthy, keeps them looking good, and importantly, reduces the risk of damage to your property or a neighbour’s when the weather turns nasty.

We’re based in Lawson and provide tree pruning services across the whole Blue Mountains region, from Mt Victoria down to Glenbrook. We deal with everything from small ornamental trees and fruit trees needing a light annual prune, through to larger established trees that need deadwooding, crown thinning, or crown lifting to keep them safe and healthy.

Pruning in the mountains has its own rhythm. A lot of deciduous trees around Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath are best pruned in winter while they’re dormant, which is also when storm damage from the colder months tends to show up and need attention. Native trees and shrubs often have different pruning windows depending on their flowering cycle, and getting the timing wrong can mean losing a season of flowers or fruit. We work with the natural cycle of each tree rather than just turning up whenever’s convenient.

Fruit trees are a big part of what we prune, since a lot of mountains properties have an apple, pear, plum or similar tucked away in the yard, sometimes planted decades ago and never properly maintained. A good winter prune on an overgrown fruit tree can make a genuine difference to the following season’s crop, as well as keeping the tree healthier and easier to manage long term.

We also do a fair amount of pruning aimed specifically at reducing risk — removing dead or weak limbs that could come down in a storm, thinning out dense canopies so wind passes through rather than pushing the whole tree over, and cutting back branches that are getting too close to roofs, power lines or fences. Given how exposed some mountains properties are, particularly up around Mt Victoria and Blackheath, this kind of preventative work is genuinely worth doing rather than waiting for something to fail.

Bushfire considerations come into a lot of our tree pruning work too. Keeping canopies appropriately clear of structures and maintaining suitable separation between trees and buildings is often part of meeting local asset protection requirements, and we can talk you through what’s needed for your specific property if you’re not sure.

We always prune with the long-term health of the tree in mind, not just how it looks straight after the job. Over-pruning or cutting in the wrong spot can cause real problems down the track, so we take a considered approach rather than just hacking away.

If you’ve got trees that need attention anywhere from Mt Victoria to Glenbrook, get in touch and we’ll come out, have a look, and let you know what we’d recommend.
